    Creating a bridge between

soil scan & reporting tool for farmers

For Springg (Wageningen), I've designed various applications (both mobile and desktop) for agricultural purposes. The mobile apps are used 'in the field' and are currently being tested in Holland and Kenya.

This diversity of locations (and cultures) dictated design principles which take into account 'less web savvy' target groups.

The soil scan app receives input from a bluetooth-connected optical soil scanner. After gathering measurements from multiple locations within the field, the data are converted into a report for the farmer. This report lists the fertilizers that would work best for the planned crop on the scanned field.

Nowadays, chargers on the side of the road are ‘dumb’ switches. Imagine these chargers being connected to the internet of things... Alliander asked me to join a project team that would create a concept app exploiting the possibilities of a smart grid. This resulted in a working prototype in which the user can:

    - select loading scheme (lazy load / fast load)
    - review price differentiation for the various loading schemes
    - set target for the minimum battery capacity at a certain time
    - select energy supplier (or even the output of his own solar panels)
    - and much more...

Role: concept thinker, interaction- and visual designer, front-end development
Deliverables: flowcharts, interaction designs, proof-of-concept, interactive prototype

When KeyGene contacted me, they had already developed Croppedia: a search engine and knowledge base for genes. Since the development had been done from a technical point of view, the look and feel were based on functionality instead of user.

My first assignment was to write a report addressing all quick wins for usability and UX. After these quick wins had been implemented, I was asked to take care of the visual identity. This resulted in a logo, a color scheme and a set of interface designs for the complete interaction flow.

    workflow application for neurologists

In collaboration with Flo Interactive (Eindhoven), we have developed an interaction concept for a desktop application for neurologists, who are searching for specific brain activity.

Our starting point was the currently used software (which was 15 years old). The end result, an interface that covers the entire workflow (from patient acquisition to treatment plan), was presented during a neurologists convention and was received very well.

    Role: interaction designer, programmer
Deliverables: flowcharts, interaction designs, a highly interactive demo

Profile & expertises

I create bridges between usability and technology

As a UX consultant & interaction designer, I help my clients develop web, mobile and desktop applications. I am a creative as well as an analytical thinker which makes me able to design with the newest technology in mind. With my programming skills, I can develop quick prototypes for presentation and testing purposes. This results in feedback on the efficiency of the product at an early stage.
I prefer working in a team, especially in a scrum environment where I can co-create with experts in various disciplines.
my expertises

Expertises:

  • concepting, when a new product is being developed, I can make a concept study with the user expectations in mind.
  • Experience flow, map all possible touchpoints for all stakeholders to the envisioned product.
  • user research, define user profiles, investigate their needs, wishes and expectations and translate that into a clear and functional document.
  • writing the interaction design, a textual and visual description of the application, covering all business and user targets, concept, functionality, design principles, navigation and interaction.
  • development of wireframes, a functional overview of the layout, covering all elements within every screen.
  • branding, usually an app has to fit into an existing family of corporate expressions, or it is an initial expression which has to grow into a larger brand
  • visual design, the development of the graphic overlay, based on the application and/or corporate identity.
  • prototype development, development of protoypes in html/css/jquery, axure or principle, or by making wireframes interactive (this depends on the stage of the project and the purpose of the prototype).
  • user testing, in various stages, but especially in the early stages, the interface is tested. I usually start by testing with the help of colleagues and the client, but for the 'real' tests I select test subjects based on personas.
